Part 1🦆

Species Identification

Before you can help a Virginia waterfowl in distress, you need to know who you’re looking at. Species identification drives everything — reunite strategy, diet, housing, and legal requirements all differ between our three native species.

  • Black head & neck with a distinctive white chinstrap

  • Long neck; grazes on short grass near water

⚠️ Misidentification = wrong care. A duckling placed on a reunite attempt like a gosling will fail. A Wood Duck released with a goose family will struggle.

Knowing When to Help

The most common mistake is rescuing animals that don’t need rescuing. Watch for at least 30–60 minutes before intervening.

When to Leave It Alone

✅ Parents are visible nearby, even if not right next to the baby
✅ Babies are actively following adults
✅ Family is resting — waterfowl often rest in groups and look ‘abandoned’
✅ Temporary separation — watch for at least 30–60 minutes before acting

When to Help

🚫 Visibly injured — bleeding, wing drooping, unable to walk
🚫 Entangled in fishing line, net, or hook
🚫 Hit by a car or window strike
🚫 Cat or dog attack — even a ‘minor’ bite causes invisible punctures
🚫 Lone baby with no parent visible after 60 minutes
🚫 Trapped in an enclosed space with no exit

Reuniting — Species Matters

🪢 Canada Geese — May Adopt
  • Geese may accept additional goslings — but this should only be attempted with guidance from an experienced rehabber. There are specific techniques that make a real difference.
  • Never attempt a goose adoption in a crowded or human-populated area — goslings will often ignore the geese and follow the people instead
  • Never attempt near roads or traffic
  • Never attempt where egg addling programs are active — the flock may be managed and unsuitable
  • If reunite conditions are right, place the gosling near the family group and observe from a distance
🦆🌿 Mallards & Wood Ducks — Ducks Do Not Adopt
  • Ducks never adopt. At best, an unrelated duck will ignore the baby. At worst, she will kill it.
  • A lone duckling with no visible mother needs rehabilitation — do not attempt placement with another duck
  • Exception: if you know the specific mother was just scared off and is nearby, you may wait quietly to see if she returns for her baby. This is not an adoption — it’s a reunite with the actual mom.
Part 3🚗

Rescue & Transport

How you capture and transport a bird can be the difference between survival and death. Minimize handling and stress at every step.

✅ DO
  • Approach slowly and quietly from behind when possible
  • Use a towel draped over the bird to cover its wings and calm it
  • For geese and larger birds: a large fishing/landing net is often the most effective capture tool — throw it over the bird and gather quickly. May require two people.
  • Use thick gloves for larger birds — geese can bite and wing-strike hard
  • Keep it warm, quiet, and dark in a secure, ventilated carrier
  • Drive calmly — avoid unnecessary stops
🚫 AVOID
  • Open tubs or boxes
  • Water dishes in the carrier — spills chill the bird
  • Excessive handling or checking on it
  • Noise, loud music, or sudden movements
🚫 Do NOT offer food or water before contacting a rehabilitator. Feeding a cold or dehydrated bird causes aspiration or organ damage.

Adult Transport — Real Example — Two adult Canada Geese in hard-sided pet carriers in a vehicle. Hard-sided carriers are ideal for adults: secure, ventilated, and easy to disinfect. Note the carriers are placed on a flat surface and secured so they cannot tip during transport.

Part 4🍼

Baby Rehabilitation

Baby waterfowl are incredibly fragile. The first 24 hours set the stage for everything that follows.

🚫 NOT food first. Feeding a cold or dehydrated bird causes aspiration, metabolic crash, and death. Warmth always comes first.

💧 Baby Waterfowl Are NOT Waterproof

⚠️ Waterproofing develops GRADUALLY. Hatchlings are not waterproof at birth. Without the mother’s preen oil, feathers soak through immediately and chilling is rapid.
🚫 Never let a baby waterfowl swim unsupervised until waterproofing is fully confirmed.
✅ Dry birds thoroughly with a towel after any water contact. Return to warm brooder immediately.

🥗 Appropriate Diet

✅ Feed These
  • Waterfowl starter crumble (unmedicated)
  • Missouri aquatic turtle food
  • Dark leafy greens — romaine, dandelion
  • Natural foraging when age-appropriate
🚫 Never Feed
  • Bread or crackers — zero nutrition
  • Medicated chick feed — toxic to waterfowl
  • Chips or salty food
  • Any human food

🏠 Housing Requirements

  • Warm brooder — 85–90°F for hatchlings, reduce ~5°F per week
  • Non-slip flooring — prevents spraddle leg, a permanent deformity
  • Shallow water dish — depth should not exceed the bird’s leg length
  • Easy exit ramps from water — steep sides cause injury and exhaustion
  • A mirror or stuffed animal reduces isolation stress

Part 5🌱

Juveniles & Release

The juvenile stage is rapid and critical. Birds grow at maximum speed and need space, enrichment, and gradual conditioning to become healthy releasable adults.

Confirming Waterproofing — Required Before Swimming & Release

✅ WATERPROOF: Water beads up and rolls off the feathers. The bird emerges dry.
🚫 NOT WATERPROOF: Feathers absorb water. The bird looks soaked after swimming.
🚫 Never release a bird that is not fully waterproof. It will die of hypothermia.

  • Canada Geese: Near an established flock; pond with grazing areas
  • Mallards: Natural wetlands or ponds with native vegetation
  • Wood Ducks: Wooded wetlands with mature trees — they need cavity-nesting habitat

Common Adult Issues

🎣 Fishing Line & Hook Injuries

🚫 Monofilament fishing line is one of the leading causes of waterfowl death. Even brief entanglement tightens with each movement and can require amputation.
  • Look for line wrapped around legs, feet, bills, or necks
  • Embedded hooks require immediate veterinary care — never attempt removal
  • Remove bird from water carefully — do NOT pull the line

🔩 Lead Poisoning

  • Primary source: lead fishing weights ingested while foraging on lake bottoms
  • Symptoms: tremors, weakness, head held low, inability to hold head up
  • Treatment possible if caught early — chelation therapy and supportive care
  • Prevention: use non-toxic alternatives (tin, bismuth, or steel weights)

🦴 Angel Wing — A Preventable Deformity

⚠️ Angel Wing is a permanent wing deformity caused by overfeeding high-carbohydrate foods (especially bread) during development. Affected birds cannot fly and cannot be released.

Why Relocation Fails

🚫 Trapping and relocating geese rarely works. New birds fill the habitat, relocated birds return due to site fidelity, and relocation causes extreme stress and high mortality.

Coexisting with Canada Geese

Most goose conflicts are solvable with education and habitat modification. Guidance drawn from the HSUS Humane Wildlife Conflict Resolution Guide (2023).

ℹ️ Canada Geese are protected year-round by the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Harming, harassing, or moving nests without a permit is illegal.

Why Geese Choose Human Spaces

  • Short, mown grass is their preferred food — exactly what parks provide
  • Open water nearby provides safety and escape routes
  • Clear sightlines allow them to spot predators

Humane Solutions That Work

✅ Habitat modification: allow shoreline vegetation to grow tall — blocks sightlines and reduces appeal
✅ Motion-activated sprinklers (Scarecrow): effective for yards and small public areas
✅ Mylar balloons on weights, 3 feet off the ground: disrupts landing
✅ Consistent hazing: raise arms, yell, use a water gun — must be repeated to work
✅ Egg addling: register with USFWS to humanely reduce nest success
✅ Community education: ‘Do Not Feed’ signs and outreach — bread causes Angel Wing

Nesting Season (March–May)

⚠️ Aggressive Goose Nearby?
  • Protecting a nearby nest — temporary (28-day incubation)
  • Section off the area and redirect foot traffic if possible
  • If you must pass: open/close an umbrella toward the goose
  • Nest removal requires a USFWS permit — eggs cannot be moved
ℹ️ Rooftop & Balcony Nests
  • Goslings cannot fly for 10 weeks — cannot get down safely alone
  • Contact AERO to help goslings exit from height safely
  • Prevent next year: place Mylar balloon deterrents in February

HPAI Protocol

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) poses significant risk to birds in our care and potential risk to rehabilitators and the public. Every volunteer must know how to recognize it and respond safely.

⚠️ Treat ANY waterfowl, raptor, or scavenging bird showing these symptoms as potentially HPAI-positive until confirmed otherwise.

  • Drive directly — avoid unnecessary stops
  • After transport: bag all coverings, disinfect all surfaces that contacted the carrier

🏥 On Arrival — Call Ahead First

  • Always call before arriving — notify AERO intake of potential HPAI
  • Transfer carrier directly to the designated isolation area
  • Maintain isolation until test results confirm HPAI-negative
  • Complete an incident report and share it with all personnel who may care for the bird
