On Sunday, August 17th, a large, mangy red fox was trapped at a neighborhood home in Fairfax City, VA. An A.E.R.O. transporter brought the fox to a wildlife rehabilitation facility for treatment of dehydration, mange, and worms. The fox was covered in scabs and missing much of his fur, (see his before treatment picture below) but was otherwise healthy.
While in captive care, he was housed in a large, outdoor enclosure. He responded well to mange/de-worming medications, and seemed to appreciate the respite and fox-appropriate diet. He started to look markedly better over the course of the week.
On August 23rd, he was given a final dosage of mange medication, effective for 90 days post-release. His release was in a wooded area near Ratcliffe Park, less than a quarter of a mile from the residence where he was trapped. His fur should completely fill in by fall.
Unfortunately we were unable to obtain a good after treatment and release photo as the fox was way too quick for us during his release.
